District 196 honors state athletes, scholars and introduces new principals

The June 22 meeting began with a series of recognitions highlighting student and staff achievement across District 196.
Thomas Sharp, Eastview head men’s track and field and cross country coach, described Luke Bakken’s comeback from hip surgery to post a 9:14 3200 (fifth) and a 4:13 1600 (third), including new school records and All‑American recognition. Sarah Hatley, Rosemount girls track coach, praised junior Abby Esler’s season that included relay school records and an 18‑ft‑9‑in long jump that improved her statewide placing over three seasons. Jason Elias, Eagan assistant principal and athletic director, recognized Ethan Wilsky’s third‑place 800m finish and strong academic record.
Jeff Erdman and other coaches introduced Rosemount’s girls flag football team (state champions, 14‑0) and encouraged board support for seeking emerging‑sport status from the Minnesota State High School League. Coaches across Eastview, Rosemount and other schools highlighted team academic honors and community participation.
Superintendent Bossart highlighted district accolades including three James Wyker scholarships awarded to District 196 broadcast students, 46 entries at the National Speech and Debate Association tournament (with a national champion from Rosemount High School), and hundreds of students in AP and college‑level coursework. Director Hansen and others introduced new leaders: Ann Jardine as Dakota Hills Middle School principal, Tamiko Thomas as Area Learning Center coordinator, and Alyssa Schultz as Rosemount Elementary principal; each thanked the board and community and spoke briefly about priorities.
These recognitions filled the opening portion of the meeting and preceded the district reports and action items later in the agenda.
