County updates: elevators, bridges and road projects; Grey Reef work tied to federal funding schedule

During the Feb. 3 Natrona County commissioners meeting, county facility and road staff presented a multi-item infrastructure update highlighting building repairs, road projects and coordination with federal programs.
Facilities staff warned that the Hall of Justice elevators have aging control boards that are failing and ‘‘the brains of it are outdated and and fallen behind seriously,’’ and that replacing compatible control systems could be expensive. Staff said they are gathering quotes and expect costs could reach into ‘‘the hundreds of thousands of dollars’’ if the system requires major work.
Road and bridge staff outlined several active projects: bidding the Buffalo Creek gravel pit, reissuing a bid for the Herps gravel pit pending DEQ groundwater information, acquiring a new shop site (lot correction pending), Squad Creek road acceptance and repair work, and easement changes related to the Badwater Bridge. A Federal Lands team plans survey flights at Grey Reef to support preliminary engineering; staff cautioned the federal funding currently supporting that work runs through September 2026 and can be disrupted by federal shutdowns.
Staff also reported routine maintenance including gravel placement on remote segments, culvert replacement at the lake access road (paid from road and bridge funds), and that Spectrum Fiber crews have begun work on Zero Road and Poison Spider toward the local school. Staff said a motor grader procurement will open for bids on the 19th.
Commissioners asked about timing and potential budget implications; staff reiterated that some items (notably elevator modernization) may require significant near-term budget planning. Commissioners asked staff to circulate quotes and projections so elected officials and municipal partners can coordinate on approach and funding.
