Superintendent reports construction progress, testing schedule and steady enrollment

Superintendent Scott Fitz Simmons told the Lake of the Woods School District board on May 18 that student enrollment remains steady at 420 students plus 16 prekindergarten pupils and that construction and safety work at the district’s facilities is progressing on a compressed summer schedule.
Fitz Simmons said the folding wall and gym work are nearly complete and that the new curtain motor is electrically compatible with existing wiring, allowing contractors to minimize additional wiring work. "We are still at the same as we were last month: 420 plus 16 pre-K," he said. He said the contractor crew plans to install components midweek, with electrical work continuing as needed.
The superintendent gave trustees a timeline for projects: flooring is scheduled for June 22 to July 2; window installation is projected for July–August pending manufacture; sidewalks may begin in early June; and roof work could extend from June through August. He also noted a pre-construction site meeting with Krauss Anderson and on-site contractors is set for Thursday to confirm sequencing and access.
Fitz Simmons summarized the district’s fiscal position while discussing operational items, saying the revised budget adopted last month is tracking as expected. "Overall with our entire budget we are within where we expect to be," he said, while noting program-level differences: food service revenues were shown lower than expenditures and community education revenues come later in the year.
On health and safety, Fitz Simmons described committee work to map out a five-year radon testing cycle to be performed when schools are closed and confirmed lead testing of potable water sources is on schedule. He said the committee identified a few guards and pieces of equipment needing replacement but found nothing that requires immediate major remediation.
The superintendent told trustees he will finish department budget meetings and meet with Todd to assemble the FY27 budget for board review at the June meeting; he also provided trustees with superintendent-evaluation materials and an entry plan in a shared folder to support upcoming one-on-one reviews.
The board will consider the finalized FY27 budget in June and the district staff will proceed with the pre-construction coordination and scheduled testing as described.
