Mendota Heights limits extra 250th-anniversary events; fireworks and food trucks to proceed

City Administrator Cheryl Jacobson told the Mendota Heights City Council at its April 21 work session that staff cannot add many events for the July Fourth/250th weekend because the city will observe the holiday on Friday and many staff will be out of town. Jacobson said the city funds the fireworks display and no additional city funding had been allocated specifically for 250th-anniversary events.
Parks & Recreation Director/Assistant Public Works Director Meredith Lawrence said two food trucks will be available at Mendakota Park before the fireworks. Jacobson also noted that the Dakota County Historical Society will host an event at the Sibley House in Mendota. Councilor Lorberbaum read an email exchange with Jacobson about additional events; Mayor Stephanie B. Levine suggested installing a banner at Mendakota Park for the holiday weekend.
Council discussion focused on whether private partners, such as Mendakota Country Club, contribute to the fireworks; Jacobson said the club has not contributed financially for some time but continues to provide the launch location and other support. Staff said they will concentrate on promoting activities already planned in Mendota Heights rather than add new city-sponsored events given staffing constraints.
