County to explore leasing old veterinary clinic with Beartooth Humane Alliance and assess property offer for county facilities

Sheriff Josh McQuillan told the board that law enforcement is handling an increasing number of animal-control calls and that the county is exploring options to house stray and loose animals. McQuillan said leasing the old Red Lodge Veterinary Clinic in partnership with the Beartooth Humane Alliance (BHA) might provide necessary sheltering capacity.
Kim Hays and Joel Adams joined the conversation representing interested parties and outlined practical considerations for a potential site at or near 5 Pepsi Drive: road maintenance needs, parking implications, and a wastewater-treatment study would be necessary if county functions moved to that location. Commissioner Scott Blain said he did not see an advantage in changing the current site; Commissioner Scott Miller said he did not want to demolish Cedarwood Villa simply to sell it and preferred development of that existing site instead.
With the board’s approval to proceed with exploration, Administrative Officer Angela Newell, Sheriff McQuillan and representatives of the Beartooth Humane Alliance will work together on draft lease terms and present recommendations to the commission at a later meeting. The commissioners scheduled a formal response agenda item for Nov. 20 for further consideration.
