Perryton ISD reports gains on state tests, will expand targeted professional development and mentoring

Dr. Tyrie, the district's curriculum and instruction lead, told the board that recent STAR assessment results included increases in several subjects: eighth-grade math rose roughly 7 percent, U.S. history increased about 14 percent, biology improved about 18 percent, and all 13 students in eighth-grade Algebra I "mastered the test," she said.
To build on those gains, Dr. Tyrie said the district will shift from one-size-fits-all professional development to targeted sessions tailored to teacher needs, with shorter on-site sessions by grade/subject. She said the district also secured a mentoring grant and has assigned mentors to new teachers. "The region is being great and they are actually coming to us for the first two days of training so that our staff doesn't have to travel the four hours," she said, describing upcoming July training sessions.
The board linked the mentoring effort to Dr. Tyrie's doctoral research on supports for alternatively certified teachers, and members said the combined approach—targeted PD plus mentoring—addresses both instructional gaps and induction supports. No formal curriculum policy votes occurred in open session at this meeting.
