Sawyer County board reviews 2025 budget, approves boost to Namekagon Transit

The Sawyer County Board of Supervisors reviewed the proposed 2025 budget and heard public comment at a special meeting on Oct. 17, 2024. County staff presented the Budget Presentation, county fee schedule, CIP summary, employee FTE and budget hearing grids; the packet identified a resulting CIP debt figure of $1,638,460 and listed an estimated 2025 tax rate of $2.46.
The board opened a public hearing on the budget and allowed members of the public to speak. Those who addressed the board included Doug Kurtzweil, Linda Zillmer, Mindy Simons, Benjamin Kurtzweil and Karrie Sabin; later commenters listed in the minutes included Mary Stuebe, Nancy Shryer, Ron Ullmer, Wayne Williamson and Ginny Chabek.
Supervisor Tweed Shuman moved to increase the Namekagon Transit budget to $180,000; Supervisor John Suralski seconded the motion. The board took a voice vote and the motion carried without negative votes. The budget hearing concluded at 7:10 p.m.
The budget presentation was delivered by Mr. Markgren, who also provided related grids and schedules. The board did not adopt the full 2025 budget at this meeting; it held a hearing and approved the transit funding increase as described. The hearing record shows the packet was provided to supervisors in advance and that the board will continue budget work consistent with the established hearing schedule.
The board adjourned the budget hearing portion of the meeting at 7:10 p.m.; the full special meeting continued with other agenda items.
