Beaufort CountySchool District staff presented a revamped budget timeline that moves public budget forums from spring to January and uses AI to synthesize input from school principals.
Katie Abar, director of budgeting (presented by Speaker 5), said the district began needs assessments in October and used AI to analyze submissions from 32 schools, producing summarized priorities the same day. The early timeline is intended to give staff more time for analysis before certification and county presentations.
The board agreed to public budget forums on Jan. 14 (Battery Creek High School) and Jan. 21 (Bluffton High School) and to a Jan. 23 work session (previously the Jan. 30 date was moved). Ms. Abar said early focus areas include mathematics, multilingual learners, special-education supports and attendance; staff will return with compiled budget priorities for board ranking in the January work session.
The board directed staff to continue community outreach (online surveys, forums, SIC input) and to prepare certification materials for the usual May hearings and county-council presentations.
