Board ranks legislative priorities; social media effects and early learning funding top the list

The Beaufort County School Board's legislative committee presented a consolidated list of ideas gathered in two ideation sessions and asked board members to rank items using an online tool.
Superintendent (Dr. Rodriguez) and Vice Chair (Speaker 4) explained the process: ideas were culled from about 29 suggestions into 22 items, then grouped into operational topics, board considerations and potential legislative priorities. Members used Mentimeter to rank six items the committee identified as likely legislative options.
The ranking placed "curbing the negative effects of technology and screen time" and "state funding of early-learning centers" at the top. Several members, however, cautioned that high-level labels need research before becoming legislation: one board member said she could not responsibly rank items without clearer language about what a bill would propose. The vice chair said the intent is to elevate topics for further study and to produce proposals for the school boards association's December session.
The committee will continue work through December and prepare more detailed language and research on the top-ranked items before deciding whether to request the South Carolina School Boards Association to sponsor or pursue legislation.
