San Diego Unified highlights Teach Lead paid internship, opens 52 in-person enrollment hubs

San Diego Unified used the superintendent’s report to spotlight the Teach Lead paid internship and to announce expanded in-person support for family enrollment.

The internship, now in its fifth year, places about 400 high school students from 20 district schools in a five-week paid leadership program. Participants earn high school credit through career technical education internship courses, receive training to serve as assistant teachers in elementary summer school classrooms, and deliver social-emotional learning lessons, the superintendent said.

A video of student interns included a participant describing daily routines and leadership development: "Habit four is think win-win... High school students come in and learn to be leaders and teaching students how they can be leaders and they can be better for their community," the student said, adding that the experience builds confidence and workplace skills.

The superintendent added a personal note that his own daughter is participating in the program and described seeing her plan lessons at home. He also announced that 52 in-person enrollment hubs are available to families now through July 2, Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and reiterated that online enrollment remains available at sandiegounified.org. The hubs offer document assistance, troubleshooting for the online form and opportunities to tour schools.

Why it matters: District leaders said the internship gives students hands-on exposure to education careers, builds leadership skills and supports elementary summer programs. The enrollment hubs are intended to lower technological and procedural barriers so families can complete registration and learn about school programs.
