The Newman City Council on June 23 adopted a resolution declaring the property at 1507 Oak Canyon Drive a public nuisance after city staff said the site had been vacant for roughly three to four months and remained in violation of city code.
"Staff recommends that the council conduct a public hearing to adopt resolution number 2026 declaring existence of a public nuisance at 1507 Oak Canyon Drive," said Allie, a city staff member who presented the item and displayed photos of the property’s condition. Allie cited Newman City Code Section 8.02030, which prohibits maintaining premises in a condition detrimental to public health, safety or general welfare, and noted that abatement costs would be recovered through a property lien under Section 8.02090.
Council members asked whether the city would address only the front yard or include the rear of the property. Allie said the city would start with the front, coordinate with the fire department to check for immediate fire hazards in the rear, and proceed with backyard abatement if necessary. One councilmember noted seeing a trailer and brief activity at the property in the last three months but said it had otherwise appeared vacant.
A council member moved to adopt the resolution declaring the nuisance, a second was made, and the motion carried 5–0.
What happens next: staff may schedule abatement work on the front yard first, evaluate the rear for fire and safety hazards with fire personnel, and — if abatement costs are incurred — file a lien against the property to recover City expenses under Newman City Code Section 8.02090.
