Under the EP model, kindergarten could move to an “early bird” extended schedule (for example 8:10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.) that aligns with first and second grades, while TK remains on an AM/PM half‑day rotation. District staff and trustees discussed the operational implications: the change would require additional classrooms, increased FTE for kindergarten teachers (the prior projection for moving both TK and K to extended day was approximately $1 million per year districtwide) and planning tied to upcoming facility construction.
Assistant Superintendent Jim Cartell and other staff described the staffing model: the existing AM/PM shared‑teacher structure for kindergarten would need reconfiguration so that three full classes (early birds) are staffed rather than two AM sections plus a shared PM cohort. Board members asked about equity across sites and how families would be affected; staff said the district’s preference is to implement the same schedule across all elementary sites to maintain equity once the program is funded and facilities are available.
The board approved the two policies and discussed returning a resolution when funding and construction milestones are met to formally enact extended‑day kindergarten across the district. Trustees also asked staff to clarify administrative guidance about how the phrase "same length of day" in policy applies on a grade‑by‑grade basis to avoid confusion for families.
Because the move depends on future funding and site readiness, the policy adoption is a planning and governance step that preserves the option to expand kindergarten hours without forcing immediate programwide change.
