Fredonia music director touts record participation; board approves multiple tenure and personnel appointments

At the June 23 meeting the board honored a longtime contract cleaner and approved tenure for multiple district educators before hearing a detailed presentation on the district’s music program.
Board members recognized 'mister Andy' for years of service and presented a certificate. The board then approved tenure for several candidates after administrators and supervisors spoke in support; Chair called for and the board approved the motion on voice votes.
Music director mister Bennett presented program numbers and accomplishments: he reported the district K–12 population for fall at 1,394 students, 1,157 students enrolled in music classes (about 83 percent of fall enrollment), 914 students in curricular performing ensembles and 578 students in extracurricular ensembles and activities. He noted the program’s recognitions, student selection for honors ensembles, partnerships with SUNY Fredonia and guest artists, a summer lesson program with almost 100 registrants, and nearly 3,858 concert streams in 2025.
Bennett also flagged facility and storage issues from program growth and said the district is exploring repurposing space and potential capital-outlay solutions.
Personnel actions taken: the board approved the appointment of Richard Sofratic to assistant principal and, by addendum, approved Leah Bilag for a music teaching position (Bilag spoke to the board via Zoom and expressed enthusiasm).
