Board flags needed Red Cedars playground repairs and age-appropriate updates

The Cedar Lake Park Board discussed repairs and updates for Red Cedars playground after staff reported rust, cracks and age-appropriateness concerns.
Josh Vanhart said the main play piece likely needs repair but that swing sets and the dome show rust and could require replacement. ‘‘For the swing sets and the dome, we need to think about having an age-appropriate piece of equipment added on,’’ Vanhart said, adding he is not a certified inspector. Board members emphasized the park system’s shortage of equipment for 5–12-year-olds and agreed to seek vendor quotes and consider prioritizing replacements that serve that age group.
The board and staff also discussed inspection responsibilities and insurance guidance. Risk management asked the parks department to adopt a new inspection form and noted that visual inspections of bleachers and playgrounds are acceptable; staff said they will pursue certification training toward the fall.
No formal capital appropriation was approved at the meeting; members directed staff to collect quotes and pursue inspection certification and reported grant-supported landscaping work elsewhere in the park system.
