Board accepts Washington Township trustee resignation, appoints replacement and approves lease estoppel

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 16 accepted a resignation and filled a township trustee vacancy and approved an estoppel agreement under a county lease.
During resignation proceedings, the presiding supervisor read a statement from Justin Myers: "I, Justin Myers, wish to resign from Washington Township trustees in Des Moines, California for reasons of conflict of interest by being the fire chief also." The board moved to accept the resignation.
The board then considered an appointment to expand Washington Township trustees from four to five and appointed John Crouch to serve the remainder of the four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2028. A motion to approve the appointment was made, seconded and carried.
Separately, county attorney Grant explained an estoppel agreement tied to a 10-year renewable lease: the estoppel confirms that if the building is sold the county will maintain the same lease terms with the new owner. "What this does is ... we have 10 days to approve an estoppel agreement ... and so what this is saying is that if they sell the building ... then we will maintain that lease with the new building owner," Grant told the board. The board approved the estoppel.
What happens next: the resignation and appointment will be recorded and the trustee seat will be filled through Dec. 31, 2028; staff will record the estoppel consistent with the lease timeline.
