Libraries preview summer reading, Pride events, community garden debut and author appearances

Highlights included the citywide summer reading kickoff on June 13, Pride-themed author events (including a Pride YA author panel on June 18), and a community garden debut at the 19th Street Garden slated for Sunday, June 21. Staff said they will table at Make Music Day and other neighborhood events and that branches will host author talks and book signings (a May 30 signing and other author appearances were mentioned). Staff also described a Techintask success story in which a regular program participant used library services and volunteer help to secure a permanent job.
Why it matters: staff said these programs are part of efforts to restore and expand community-facing programming after staffing changes, using partnerships and volunteers to reach families and youth. The City’s State of the City and other summer activations will further increase downtown and promenade foot traffic, staff said.
Next steps: staff will finalize event dates and share calendars; trustees encouraged outreach to families and local partners to maximize participation.
