CDC seeks partners to expand NHSN digital quality measures using FHIR; aims to onboard up to 2,000 hospitals by 2027
Summary
CDC described a project to scale National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Digital Quality Measures (DQMs) using FHIR APIs and hospital onboarding support. The funded partner would lead education, onboarding cohorts and technical assistance to connect hospital FHIR APIs to NHSN Link.

CDC presenters said the NOFO includes a targeted project to expand participation in the National Healthcare Safety Network’s Digital Quality Measures (DQMs) by leveraging Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) APIs.
"FHIR application programming interfaces, APIs, will be used to submit as a single bundle to detect new multiple digital quality measures," Maggie Dudek said, describing the technical approach. Dudek outlined expectations that a funded partner would coordinate with hospital leaders and IT staff to complete onboarding, ensure data meet the NHSN DQM content package implementation guide, pass verification and validation steps, and submit at least one month of DQM data to demonstrate end-to-end connection.
By the end of 2027, presenters said the goal is to have complete onboarding of up to 2,000 U.S. hospitals and to have all U.S. hospitals participating in one or more DQMs within five years. The funded partner would provide peer-to-peer learning cohorts, training materials, implementation coordinators for hospitals, and verification support in collaboration with NHSN.
Why it matters: Expanding automated DQM reporting could accelerate detection of hospital-onset bacteremia/fungemia and other patient-safety metrics and support performance improvement at scale. Applicants need experience with health IT onboarding, FHIR implementations, hospital partnerships and data validation processes.
Next steps: Interested applicants should describe specific onboarding support capabilities, partnerships with health systems and IT personnel, and plans for scaling education and verification activities.
