The Town of Bernalillo governing body voted unanimously Feb. 9 to add one firefighter to the Fire Department and authorize budget transfers between the General Fund and the Fire Protection Fund to pay for the new position. The council adopted Resolution No. 02-09-2026 after Finance Director Terri Gray explained the staffing need and funding plan.
Gray told the council the annual cost for the position — which includes personnel services, overtime and employee benefits — is $104,892. She said the Fire Protection Fund had seen an approximately $146,000 increase related to ISO-related adjustments, which the town will use to offset the personnel costs and realign operating expenditures.
Councilor Valverde moved to approve Resolution No. 02-09-2026; Councilor Torres-Quintana seconded the motion. The roll-call vote recorded Councilor Montoya, Councilor Prairie, Councilor Torres-Quintana and Councilor Valverde as voting "Yea." Mayor Torres stated that no action was taken during the earlier executive session related to bargaining and the council resumed regular session before the vote.
The resolution adds the position to the Fire Department's authorized staffing and authorizes the necessary transfers to maintain staffing levels, according to the text presented to the council. No amendments were offered during the meeting; the document states the transfers will move appropriate expenditures from the General Fund Fire Department budget to the Fire Protection Fund.
