Bernalillo wins $2 million in state capital outlay for planned fire station; council hears update on bids

State Representative Derrick Lente informed the Town of Bernalillo governing body on March 9 that the 2026 legislative session included a capital outlay award for the town.
"In Senate Bill 2 to be signed by the Governor, the Town of Bernalillo was awarded 2 million towards the new Fire Station," Lente said. He also noted the session ran 30 days and that lawmakers passed more than 100 bills.
Mayor Jack S. Torres told the council the town has advertised the request for bids for the new fire station and that bid opening is scheduled in early April. "We're waiting for the Governor to sign that 2 million capital outlay. So, that would take us to $10 million for the Fire Station so hopefully that will pass," he said, adding that the town hopes construction can begin once funds and contracts are in place.
Mayor Torres also reported a recent visit from several EPA regional officials to the town wastewater plant and described an intermunicipal agreement in which the town leased unused San Juan Chama water rights to the Village of Corrales to help that community meet state requirements.
Why it matters: the town's fire-station project depends on assembling multiple funding sources and completing a public bidding process. The $2 million state award, if finalized with the governor's signature, would be a significant portion of the town's financing plan.
The council did not vote on project contracts during the meeting; councilors approved motions on other agenda items and will consider construction contracts and related procurement steps in subsequent meetings or procurements once funding is formally in hand.
