Bernalillo council approves rezoning of 1101 Exchange Place to allow public facility use

The Town of Bernalillo Governing Body on Feb. 23 approved Ordinance 366, amending the official zoning map to reclassify 1101 Exchange Place (Venada Plaza Commercial Center, Lot 1‑A) from M‑1 (Light Manufacturing) to SU (Special Use) to permit public facilities on the roughly 2.023‑acre site.
Planning and Zoning Director Rebecca Bolen presented the ordinance and supporting materials, including the development plan and an accompanying letter from the Bernalillo Fire Department describing the site’s intended use for a fire station, training space, apparatus bays and associated support facilities. No members of the public spoke for or against the rezoning during the hearing.
Councilor Gerred R. Prairie moved to adopt Ordinance 366; Councilor Vincent Montoya seconded. A roll‑call vote recorded unanimous approval by Councilors Montoya, Valverde, Prairie and Torres‑Quintana.
Why it matters: the ordinance changes the site’s allowed uses and clears the way for a public‑facility development plan the town has described as a fire station and related support space. The Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval at its Dec. 2, 2025 hearing and the ordinance notes consistency with the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and public‑services goals.
