Veterans group asks Orange County to back Cedar Grove memorial; commissioners signal support

At the start of the March 5 meeting, David Terrell, speaking for the Northern Orange County Veterans Association (NOVA), asked the Board to approve a Cedar Grove Veterans Memorial at the Cedar Grove Community Center.
Terrell described a two-part memorial: an indoor panel listing names of individuals who attended Cedar Grove School between 1951 and 1969 (estimated cost about $30,000) and outdoor inlaid bricks around the existing Flag Plaza to honor veterans from World War II to the present. NOVA identified more than 200 veterans from the Cedar Grove community with little public recognition beyond VA grave markers and offered to self-fund the outdoor elements and to maintain the Flag Plaza and continuous flag flying.
Commissioner Earl McKee strongly endorsed the project and said he and Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford had met with Terrell and another supporter. McKee asked staff to check available funding; he indicated approximately $4,500 might already be available for the wall panel. Commissioner Bedford noted staff indicated the project could proceed in phases, beginning with available funds and adding fundraising/sales for the remainder.
The request will return to staff for funding checks and possible placement on a future agenda for formal action.
