The North Wilkesboro Board of Commissioners unanimously voted March 26 to accept $1,936,412.60 in Helene Local Government Capital Grant funding to repair damage to three sections of the Yadkin River Greenway.
Assistant Town Manager and Town Clerk J. Dylan Blankley told the board the funding was pursued in fall 2025 and that the town has already been approved for the grant; the Board's formal acceptance completes the local action needed to receive the money. Blankley said there is no required local match for the grant.
Blankley described the repairs as focused on three damaged areas along the greenway between Memorial Park and Smoot Park; he did not provide a construction schedule at the meeting. The project will use the Helene grant funding to repair the specified sections, according to Blankley.
Mayor Randy Huffman and commissioners voted 4-0 to accept the funding after the formal motion by Commissioner Andrew Palmer and a second from Commissioner Alex Hamilton.
The acceptance follows staff comments earlier in the meeting about recent Memorial Park maintenance: Town Manager Eddie Holland said the Memorial Park light poles have been removed and the fields reopened for daytime use while staff seeks funding to replace lights. Blankley and Holland did not link a timeline for greenway repairs to the replacement of the Memorial Park lighting.
Next steps identified at the meeting were procedural: the Board's acceptance authorizes staff to proceed with the grant administration steps necessary to receive and obligate the funds. Blankley did not specify required state approvals, contractors, or an estimated construction timetable during the meeting.
Votes at a glance: The motion to accept $1,936,412.60 in Helene Local Government Capital Grant funding was moved by Commissioner Andrew Palmer, seconded by Commissioner Alex Hamilton and carried unanimously (4-0).
