Moorhead council honors local volunteers; VFW donation helps Matson Field upgrades

Moorhead — The Moorhead City Council on June 22 recognized local volunteers and community partners for work on food distribution and youth recreation projects.
The council presented an acknowledgment to the First Congregational United Church of Christ for volunteer efforts supporting people experiencing homelessness. A representative of the congregation described a long-running food-cart distribution and partnerships with the Great Plains Food Bank and local shelters, saying roughly "45 people regularly come to church" and that the church relies on volunteer donations and partnerships to keep the program running.
The council also thanked VFW Post 1223 for a donation to Matson Field. Sean Brandenburgg and a VFW representative said the gift funded upgrades and supported naming of the home-team third-base dugout. Parks staff noted phase one improvements are complete and fundraising for a second phase has begun.
Council members used the recognitions to highlight other upcoming community events and volunteer opportunities, including Flutterfest (a Pollinator Week event at MB Johnson Park), the Klay County Fair (July 9–12), and a University of Minnesota Extension presentation. City Manager Damal reminded residents about the Safe City Nights series and a June 29 ribbon cutting at Romkey Park.
What’s next: Parks staff said additional fundraising and project-planning are underway for Matson Field; no formal city commitments or new budget actions were announced at the meeting.
