AAMPO panel approves amendment to move I‑35 widening to July 2026

The Ames Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Policy Committee approved an amendment to its FFY 2026–2029 Transportation Improvement Program on Tuesday to move the I‑35 widening project between Huxley and U.S. 30 up to July 2026.
Kyle Thompson, an AAMPO transportation planner, told the committee the amendment is a timing change for a state-led project and does not affect local funding. "No impact of local funding or anything like that since it's a state project," Thompson said, and he added the public comment period was brief and produced no comments.
The public hearing on the amendment was opened and closed with no members of the public speaking. A committee member moved to approve the amendment, a colleague seconded, and the committee approved the measure by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded.
The committee also approved its consent agenda earlier in the meeting by voice vote. The meeting adjourned shortly after the TIP action.
The amendment will allow the state to proceed with the I‑35 widening project on an accelerated schedule; AAMPO staff said because portions of the project fall within the MPO boundary, the committee’s approval of the TIP amendment was required. Thompson said the only change since the item appeared on the May 26 consent list was the brief public comment period, which returned no comments.
The Transportation Policy Committee did not set a further local action at the meeting; the item was approved and the meeting was adjourned.
