Maquoketa council approves multiple ordinance amendments, purchases fuel system and accepts sidewalk bids

The Maquoketa City Council on Monday approved multiple second‑reading amendments to the city code and several resolutions, voting unanimously on a package of routine and administrative items.
Council members moved quickly through the consent agenda, approving the May 18 minutes, bills payable through June 1 totaling $1,768,416.66, a new class B retail alcohol license for More Local and renewals of tax and tobacco permits for Casey’s locations. The consent agenda passed on a roll call vote.
On ordinances, the council completed second readings and moved to passage on the following amendments: updates to boards and commission operational procedures; membership requirements for the airport commission; a new solid‑waste control subsection; repeal of contractor registration and related provisions; changes to nuisance abatement procedures; regulations for wireless communications facilities; sign regulations; and amendments to residential and fire code safety provisions. Each ordinance was put forward as a second reading, received a motion and second, and passed by roll call vote with no substantive debate recorded.
Council also approved several resolutions: authorization to purchase a new fuel master system for the city pumps from OEC Incorporated for $22,684.83; a resolution authorizing collection of city costs to abate nuisances and enforce ordinances; and acceptance of bids for the 2026 individual sidewalk repair project. Motions and seconds for those resolutions were recorded and each passed on roll call.
Several procedural notes were made on the floor: councilmembers confirmed the second‑reading votes and, when asked whether to proceed to a third reading on at least one ordinance, agreed to move on without an additional reading. The meeting closed with reports and a possible special meeting to finalize splash pad construction plans and release them for bid.
What happens next: ordinances amended by the council will be incorporated into the Maquoketa Code of Ordinances and the accepted sidewalk contract will proceed according to procurement rules; the city manager signaled staff may call a special meeting soon to release splash‑pad plans for competitive bidding.
