Oneida County forestry committee approves grant application, special event, equipment bid notice and accepts tower lease

Rhinelander, Wis. — The Oneida County Forestry, Land & Recreation Committee approved several routine but consequential items at its April 14 meeting, including a grant application, a special event agreement, equipment procurement steps and a closed-session lease acceptance.
WDNR Wildlife Biologist Curt Rollman told the committee he intends to file the same White Tails Unlimited grant the county applied for last year and requested the committee’s approval to seek $1,500 on the county’s behalf. Chair Robert Almekinder moved to authorize the WDNR/County to apply; the motion, seconded by Sorgel, passed unanimously.
Forestry Director Nemec reported the department is now live with Recreogo, an online service that allows recreational users to purchase trail passes and reserve pavilions and campground sites. Nemec also said the department took delivery of a replacement work truck (to replace a 2016 vehicle) and has three applicants for an LTE ranger position, with interviews expected by the end of April.
The committee approved the annual special event agreement for the RASTA Rally at the Washburn Trail system (motion by Briggs, second by Schultz) and authorized a notice for bids to replace the department’s oldest ATV (2008 model) using funds budgeted in the Forestry Equipment Account (motion by Schultz, second by Briggs). Both motions passed on unanimous voice votes.
Staff presented a month-to-date stumpage report: Rady said March stumpage totaled $51,543.07, bringing the year-to-date stumpage to $202,643.43. Rady also reported there are 12 timber sales out for bid — seven new and five resale packages — with bids due May 7 and advertised prices reduced by about 15% to match current markets.
The committee entered closed session under Wisconsin Statutes §19.85 for negotiating public property and for personnel considerations. Returning to open session, Chair Almekinder announced the committee had approved the closed-session minutes of Dec. 9, 2025, and accepted the Vertical Bridge lease agreement as presented. The meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
The committee listed its next meeting for May 12, 2026, with agenda items including award of timber sale bids and the 2025 Forestry Department annual report.
