Residents press council on dogs at large and conditions at Gibson Housing

Two residents used the public-comment period at Trenton’s June 9 council meeting to raise safety and housing concerns.
Cari Erven said her son was riding his bike the previous night when a pit bull chased him back to their home on College Street; she asked what laws the city has to address dogs running at large. The Mayor told Erven the city has an ordinance prohibiting dogs running at large and advised her to call the police and file a report so officers can pursue the matter.
Valerie Jenkins, who said she lives in the Gibson Housing Apartment Complex and moved to Trenton from Chicago to be closer to family, described problems with her landlord and apartment maintenance. Jenkins said the situation has been "a disaster." The Mayor and council members told Jenkins they would check into her concerns.
Council members apologized to both Erven and Jenkins and thanked citizens for bringing issues forward. The meeting minutes record that council members encouraged residents to report incidents to city staff or police so the city can act.
