Oronoco planning commission approves sign permit for 230 Minnesota Avenue N

The Oronoco Planning and Zoning Commission on March 5 approved a resolution allowing a 6-foot-by-3-foot sign to be installed on the front of the building at 230 Minnesota Avenue North.

Staff member Evan Mson summarized the application and supporting materials, saying "there's a letter dated, I believe, February 18th, noting that they are putting up two signs," and explained that under the city's historic sign overlay one of the two signs requires the commission's review and the other does not because it "doesn't have the name of the business." The packet included a sample resolution with recommended findings and conditions that commissioners used for the vote.

Commissioners questioned the sign's lighting and construction; staff said the submitted design is front-lit (electrical in the logo) rather than back-lit or neon. Commissioners also confirmed the sign measures roughly 6 by 3 feet (about 18 square feet). After discussion, a commissioner moved to adopt the packet's sample resolution, the motion was seconded, and the commission voted in favor.

After the vote staff explained that, because the planning and zoning commission approved the resolution, the applicant may now secure the city permit to install the sign. The commission asked staff to update minutes language to reflect that the action is a resolution from planning and zoning rather than a recommendation to council.
