Zeeland Planning Commission elects officers; staff reports on master plan RFP and meeting procedures

The City of Zeeland Planning Commission held its annual election of officers on Jan. 8, 2026. Bill Elhart was nominated and re-elected as Planning Commission Chair; Dan Klompmaker was elected Vice Chair. Tim Klunder nominated Amanda Cooper for Secretary, and Chairman Elhart nominated Commissioner Rebecca Perkins to serve on the Site Plan Review Committee. All nominations carried unanimously by voice vote.
City Attorney Jim Donkersloot opened nominations and confirmed the annual obligation to elect a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and a Site Plan Review Committee member. Nominations and supporting seconds were recorded in the meeting minutes; each nomination passed by voice vote without dissent.
In additional business, Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday reviewed potential scheduling conflicts for several 2026 Planning Commission meeting dates and provided an updated calendar for the record. He outlined the procedures, application process, fees, and internal steps required to call Special Planning Commission meetings and noted an uptick in the number of special meetings held in the past year.
Maday also reported that the city received nine responses to the Master Plan rewrite request for proposals; staff is interviewing selected candidates and plans to bring a recommendation to City Council at its Jan. 20, 2026 meeting. He reminded Commissioners that the Internal Parking Working Group will meet on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026.
Commissioners briefly discussed Ottawa County’s recent release of ‘‘small footprint homes’’ and whether such housing types are permitted in Zeeland. Maday responded that Zeeland’s ordinances require a minimum of 600 square feet on the main level and 1,000 square feet overall in the R-1 zone district, and that staff would further review those housing types against the city’s ordinances.
The meeting adjourned at 6:13 PM following a motion by Commissioner Dan Klompmaker and support from Commissioner Bob Blanton.
