Bernards Township honors Morocco and Brazil teams, hosts cultural events tied to FIFA World Cup

Bernards Township’s Committee on June 23 adopted resolutions recognizing the Morocco and Brazil national football teams for training and staying in the township during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and highlighted related community events.

Mayor Dwarte McCarthy read Resolution 2026-317 honoring Morocco’s national team for holding training sessions at the Pingry School and for engaging with the local community. The resolution, adopted by roll call, thanked local organizers and noted the township’s June 13 “Battle of Basking Ridge” soccer village and cultural street fair. The committee likewise approved Resolution 2026-316 recognizing Brazil’s presence; the Brazil delegation was not present at the meeting.

The committee introduced Morocco’s visiting delegation and local partners, and the Consul General (recorded in the minutes as Muhammad At Beit) addressed the meeting, thanking Bernards Township for its hospitality and describing the award of a ceremonial key and a gift from the Moroccan delegation. Mayor McCarthy and committee members praised local volunteer groups and the Pingry School for hosting training sessions.

Committee members framed the visits as opportunities for cultural exchange and community pride. Deputy Mayor Hodes and others described a successful watch party and cultural programming that accompanied the teams’ stay. The record notes support from the Choose New Jersey World Cup community initiative grant for some activities.

The resolutions were ceremonial and non-binding; no fiscal appropriations or policy changes were made at the meeting. The committee said it will present ceremonial keys and host future events to acknowledge both teams.

What’s next: The township said it plans a future presentation of keys and additional community events related to the World Cup visits.
