Oronoco council approves remote generator monitoring, EV firefighter training and safety testing

The Oronoco City Council on Feb. 17 approved several fire and emergency operations items aimed at improving readiness and equipment oversight, including a remote monitoring subscription for the fire hall generator, a one-time EV firefighting training event and annual fit testing for responders.
Public works director Johan described the proposed remote monitoring system for the fire hall’s natural-gas generator as an alerting service that reports status to staff on phones and tablets. Johan said the monitoring brings "peace of mind" because it provides 24/7 alerts for faults, runs and communication issues; staff compared the fire hall unit to the treatment-plant generator that already has monitoring. Council debated whether the city should purchase the subscription now or budget it for 2027 and discussed which staff or on-call responders would receive alerts. After discussion the council approved the monitoring purchase by voice vote and noted the need to add annual subscription costs to future budgets.
Fire department representatives asked for a one-time, $3,000 EV-training event that uses a mobile trailer and vehicle props to teach firefighters how to handle electric-vehicle fires, thermal runaway and charging-station incidents. Staff said the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training increases EV-training reimbursement this year and that Byron and Elgin chiefs had expressed interest in participating. Council approved the training unanimously and confirmed the department would pursue reimbursement from MBFT.
Council also authorized annual respirator fit testing for 26 personnel (Med Compass), including vitals checks; staff said this draws on the medical-services budget line. Separately, council approved the recommended removal of Ryan Fee from the fire department for failing to attend drills and meetings and directed staff to send certified notice and retrieve city property by March 15.
Council members asked administrators to standardize monitoring across standalone generators (treatment plant, lift station, future wellhouses) to avoid single oddball systems, and to clarify long-term responsibilities for alerts and troubleshooting. The council recorded voice approval for the generator monitoring purchase, EV-training event and fit testing during the meeting.
