HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Cabell County Commission on Oct. 9 approved a series of routine administrative actions, tabled a probate-related petition and scheduled several voter-administration steps.
The meeting opened at 10:00 a.m. with a unanimous vote to accept the agenda. Commissioners approved purchase orders #15-60689 through #15-61017 and related pay jackets and accepted actions on erroneous assessments, land consolidations, split tickets and probate documentation.
County Attorney William Watson addressed a petition to resign as executor for the Estate of Mabel Virginia Fields and said procedures required the County Clerk’s Probate Department be contacted before a resignation could be finalized. Vickie Newman, a daughter of the decedent, told the Commission she had not learned of the meeting until the previous day and said she would serve as executor if her brother would not. Danny Fields said he had been prevented from carrying out duties, alleging his sister refused to allow him entry to the home. Watson instructed Newman to provide Fields with a key and warned that refusal could lead to contempt of court. The Commission voted to table the matter until the Oct. 23 regular meeting.
The Commission approved the establishment of accounts for 2014 Community Participation Grants and the State Homeland Security Grant; accepted Irv Johnson, Cabell County Assessor’s report of additional compensation for September (sheep/goat tax $5.40; dog tags $329.20); and approved the hiring of Sarah Dixon as a full-time Assistant Prosecuting Attorney effective Oct. 20, 2014, at $48,500 per year.
County Manager Chris Tatum said voting precincts 62 and 66, previously located at Culloden Elementary, would be temporarily moved to First Missionary Baptist Church and that notices would be mailed to affected voters. Tatum also announced a Public Test of election-tabulation equipment for Oct. 28, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in room 108; the Commission approved advertising that test.
The Commission approved a $5,500 Senior Citizen levy request for the Green Bottom Community and Senior Center and passed a resolution recognizing the Cabell County Courthouse fundraising team 'Cabell County Courthouse Cares' for success in the Path to the Cure event.
In Good and Welfare, Mike Davis, director of CCERC, said a telecommunications dispatch training class would be offered at the Cabell County Vocational Technical Center in January 2015. President Nancy Cartmill adjourned the meeting at 10:45 a.m.
