Ada Tree Commission: planting largely finished; removals and survey planned

Michele Chambers, chair of the Ada Tree Commission, opened the May 15, 2026 meeting in the municipal council chambers and the commission approved the April 17 minutes on a 9-0 roll call.
Public Works reported that the majority of scheduled trees have been planted, with four to five remaining to be installed. Staff said crews will begin tree removals over the next two weeks and will undertake mulching and weeding at the village pool as part of routine maintenance.
Terry Keiser, the commission forester, said campus trees for ONU have arrived but are not yet planted and are scheduled to be planted after graduation ceremonies. Keiser also said the commission has lost eight trees in recent seasons, including three planted in a fall project two to three years ago, and urged the group to “stay ahead of” young silver maples that may need removal.
Commissioners flagged site-specific maintenance needs: Public Works noted a stump east of Chicago needs removal, and John Lomax identified a tree by the library that requires pruning. Keiser said he would like a tree survey completed soon and for a removals list to be prepared and advertised for bids.
The commission did not take formal action on individual removals at the meeting; members discussed next steps for bidding and scheduling. The meeting adjourned after a closing procedural motion that passed on a 9-0 roll call.
