Polk County authorizes bids for G Road bridge replacement; bat protections limit demolition window

Polk County commissioners authorized advertising for bids on the G Road bridge replacement, after JEO reviewed plans showing the grade will be raised about two feet and noting demolition must occur before April 1 or after Oct. 31 to protect long-eared bats.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 20 to move forward with replacing the bridge over the north branch of the Blue River on G Road and to authorize advertising for bids.
Brian McDonald of JEO Consulting reviewed the replacement plans and told the board the new grade will be raised approximately two feet over the existing bridge and that temporary and permanent easements have been secured. He noted a Polk County Rural Public Power District pole may need relocation affecting one customer.
McDonald also said the presence of long-eared bats will constrain demolition timing; demolition must occur before April 1 or after Oct. 31 to avoid disrupting the species. The board directed JEO to proceed with bid documents and authorized advertising for bids; Commissioner Ron Boruch made the motion and it passed unanimously.
The board noted the Road Department will coordinate any required utility relocations and that the Highway Superintendent and consultant will inspect additional intersections (127th & J Road and one on the Butler County line) while on site. Advertisement of bids begins the procurement phase; no contract award was recorded at this meeting.
