Highway superintendent updates Board; consultant says not all rural rail crossings need stop signs

Highway Superintendent Theis updated the Polk County commissioners on road-department work during the Jan. 27 meeting. Theis reported routine maintenance and ongoing projects and noted upcoming demonstrations and federal funding notices.
Brian McDonald of engineering firm JEO advised the Board that, after reviewing applicable regulations, he does not feel there is a need to install stop signs at all rural railroad crossings. That guidance indicates the county can evaluate crossings individually rather than pursue blanket sign installation.
The Board was also informed that Congressman Flood’s office reported the House of Representatives has approved funding for the Lone Star West project. Separately, an on-site demonstration of Caterpillar’s Vision Link equipment-management program was scheduled for the Board’s next meeting.
No formal highway-related motions or votes were recorded in the Jan. 27 minutes; the items were presented for information and future consideration.
