Students ask board to create robotics committee, cite inequities in space and funding

Students representing county robotics teams told the board that program success is strongly linked to access to resources: build space, machine shops, mentors and funding. A student identified himself as a team captain for FRC Team 1499 and said his team ‘‘qualified for the World Championship’’ only after securing temporary build space; he and Sean Kumar of FRC 4099 urged a standing county committee to create a direct line to the board and to develop shared facilities, mentorship stipends, and partnerships with industry and higher education.
Megan Lowe, also from an FRC team, described how teams raise funds and run outreach programs, and said continued expansion of STEM opportunities requires formalized support from Montgomery County Public Schools. Board members noted that stipend funding for robotics mentors and related activities was included in the adopted budget but remains subject to negotiation in association agreements.
The students provided a white paper and asked the board to include their recommendations in planning; trustees congratulated teams on achievements and asked staff to ensure the budgeted funds are implemented in bargaining processes where appropriate.
