Chief Nicholson: County budget restored roughly $82,000 for fire operations; 911 to get automated dispatch

Chief Nicholson reported that the office secured two firefighter positions and a maintenance technician in the county budget and that most requested items were included. He said earlier readings cut three line items — vehicle maintenance ($25,000), maintenance general ($18,750) and contractual services ($37,674) — a total of $81,424, and that the commission recovered approximately $82,000 on the third reading to restore those amounts.

The chief described recent operational issues tied to construction damage to fiber and copper lines serving the new detention center. Although the county’s redundancy and backup plans largely preserved 911 service, staff reported intermittent problems with tone and voice alerts during the outage and subsequent repair activity. "One minute the tones were going out, one minute you had tones, no verbal, and the next minute you had verbal, no tones," a presenter said while describing troubleshooting and repairs.

Staff also said the 911 budget includes funding for an automated dispatch system expected "in the near future." Presenters said the new system will support station alerting and automated station functions (examples discussed included remote door control and other station automation features), though they cautioned many features will require additional investment to implement across stations. The commission invited questions and clarified that the staffing increases and the automated dispatch item were both included in the adopted budget.
