City planning staff previewed a rezoning and government‑use overlay (GUO) on June 23 for seven parcels along Division Street the city received from Bridgestone Firestone, describing the plan that would enable a proposed new two‑story police station and associated secured parking.
Planner Ms. Alshab said the current zoning on most parcels is heavy industrial (I2) and staff will request a change to downtown (DT) zoning and add a government-use overlay. The GUO would permit government uses and impose development restrictions; staff said the city would remain the property owner under conditions of the transfer from Bridgestone Firestone.
Staff showed an initial site plan indicating a public entrance and parking along Division Street and secured access to a sally port at the rear of the site. The project is presented as a component of the East Gateway plan, which staff said calls for reusing and uplifting the former Bridgestone Firestone site as a “community hub.”
The presenter said the rezoning and GUO are a preview ahead of a scheduled Planning Commission public hearing on July 20; the council did not take action on the rezone at the June 23 meeting. The planner noted that exhibits will be amended (signage and some graphics) before the commission hearing and that permitted uses and general development restrictions will be specified in the GUO application.
