The West Hartford Board of Education held its regular meeting on Nov. 20, 2018, and completed its annual organizational business. Superintendent Tom Moore served as temporary chair to conduct elections; Carol Blanks was elected chairperson by unanimous vote.
Deb Polun was elected vice chairperson in a 5–2 vote after a nomination by Dr. Greenberg and second by Mr. Pauluk. Dr. Lorna Thomas‑Farquharson was elected secretary by unanimous vote. The board also approved motions to appoint financial examiners for the Democratic and Republican parties; both motions passed unanimously.
During the same portion of the agenda the board voted 5–2 to table consideration of a proposed change to school start times "in light of recent events," a motion moved by Mrs. Blanks and seconded by Ms. Polun. The board approved the minutes of its Nov. 7 meeting unanimously.
Student representatives reported brief updates from Hall and Conard high schools, including a new anti‑hate program at Hall, and Superintendent Moore highlighted a student food drive that collected “hundreds of pounds of food” for those in need. The meeting concluded with routine announcements and a schedule of upcoming regular board meetings.
The board adjourned at 8:36 p.m.
