Assistant Superintendent Paul Vicinus, with Anne McKernan, director of secondary education, presented an overview Dec. 4 of West Hartford’s current graduation requirements and forthcoming state requirements for the graduating class of 2023.
Vicinus said West Hartford currently requires 21.75 credits for graduation; the new state requirements raise the total to 25.0 credits, add a world language and a capstone requirement, and increase the health credit requirement while maintaining civics and arts requirements.
Staff described the planning and implementation process, including formation of a District Requirement Committee and a Board of Education Policy Review Committee to examine course offerings, scheduling and potential impacts on vocational programs and college-readiness pathways. Vicinus said he will prepare and present public reports and updates to the Board over the next year.
Board members asked how the district compares with others nationally, how incoming freshmen timing will be handled, what impacts the change will have on vocational training and the estimated cost of adding credits; staff said those issues will be addressed as committees meet and public reports are prepared.
No vote or formal policy change was recorded at the meeting; staff framed the presentation as preparatory work ahead of formal policy review and public discussion.
