West Hartford reports small dip in ELA scores; math remains above state average

District curriculum and assessment leaders presented 2018 Smarter Balanced (SBAC) results to the board on Nov. 7, 2018.
Assistant Superintendent Paul Vicinus, Director of Secondary Education Anne McKernan and Kerry Jones, Director of Elementary Education, reported that West Hartford students’ ELA proficiency was about 76% in 2018, a 1.4-percentage-point decline from the prior reporting period, while mathematics mastery averaged 61%. Both ELA and math results remain approximately 15 percentage points higher than the state average. Participation across grades 3–8 was reported at 99.5% for literacy and 99.2% for mathematics.
Presenters noted positive gains in mathematics achievement for both high-needs and non-high-needs student groups and emphasized long-term planning to address the achievement gap.
Why it matters: Assessment outcomes inform curriculum priorities, resource allocation and strategies to close achievement gaps. District leaders told the board they will continue targeted planning and interventions based on subgroup performance.
