The Simsbury Board of Finance opened its Jan. 20 meeting by addressing a procedural lapse and a proposed change to the town website. As Chair Heavner said, “I apologize publicly to members of our community for falling short” after the agenda was not posted online until the afternoon and was missing from the town calendar.
The chair asked the board to table a request for a supplemental appropriation until its next regular meeting in February, and members moved and approved the motion to postpone. The board then approved an amendment to the agenda to add discussion of the town’s new website and solicit public input on its design.
During the website discussion members raised concerns about a proposal reportedly under consideration by the first selectman to remove older minutes from the public site and leave only 10 years online. Several members argued that limiting access would reduce transparency and hinder the board’s ability to research past decisions. One member asked the town to add an in‑browser viewing option so residents would not need to download documents to read minutes.
By consensus the board agreed to recommend keeping digital meeting minutes accessible for more than 10 years and to ask staff to investigate adding an in‑browser viewer and searchability improvements. Staff said they will return with a recommendation and that any supplemental appropriation would be addressed at the February meeting.
