Superintendent warns LIPA tax litigation could raise local levies for Kings Park residents

Superintendent Dr. Egan updated the Kings Park Central School District board on litigation involving the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and its potential effect on local tax levies.
Speaking during the superintendent’s reports, Dr. Egan said the district and legal counsel are following court proceedings in which LIPA has sought removal of multiple properties from town tax rolls in Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip and Smithtown. He said the towns are negotiating with LIPA and that the six superintendents who serve Smithtown-area districts are working with the town to assess whether and how the dispute might affect Kings Park tax levies.
"My concern is that if LIPA pays less tax, local area businesses and residents will ultimately pay more tax," Dr. Egan said. He told the board he had requested a meeting with the town supervisor and the assessor and would keep trustees informed over the summer as the matter evolves.
Dr. Egan framed the update as an early warning rather than an action item; he asked the board to remain informed and said the district will continue to coordinate with counsel and local officials.
The board did not take formal action on the litigation at the June 16 meeting; the superintendent said he would report developments to trustees as they occur.
