Superintendent Bryan requests 0.4 special-education FTE after recent enrollment increases
Summary
Superintendent Bryan told the Hinsdale Township HSD 86 HR Committee that two English sections now exceed state special-education ratios and asked for a 0.4 FTE staffing increase to comply with Illinois requirements and students' IEPs; the committee treated the request as administrative and will carry it to the June 25 public board meeting.

Superintendent Bryan asked the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 HR Committee on June 16 for an additional 0.4 full‑time equivalent (FTE) position to address recent special-education enrollments that pushed two English classrooms beyond state ratios.
Bryan said staffing at the time of the spring staffing plan matched enrollment, but new students have arrived and "we have had additional students enroll," resulting in two English sections that each have students who receive more than 60% of the school day in special-education services. He noted Illinois State Board of Education guidance and IDEA-related ratios: the district uses a 1-to-8 ratio for classrooms where students receive more than 60% of their day in special education (with higher ceilings if an aide is present). "We are at 14 in each of those sections," Bryan said, explaining the practical effect on classroom staffing.
Board members and administrators discussed compliance and administrative handling. Several members characterized the request as primarily an administrative, compliance-driven staffing adjustment; one member suggested items like this could be placed on the full-board consent agenda rather than requiring extensive committee deliberation. Administrators confirmed individual IEPs are in place for affected students.
The HR Committee did not take a formal vote to adopt the staffing change during the meeting; administration indicated the staffing request and related documentation will be brought forward to the June 25 public board meeting for action as appropriate.
Next steps: the district will present the staffing request at the June 25 board meeting, and any formal staffing changes will be reflected in public board materials and posted data as the administration prepares them.
