Silver Lake officials report on village sign, water study review and street repairs; police note $20,000 recovered in scam case

During reports of village officials on April 20, Mayor Dunphy, department heads and the clerk provided operational updates on signage, grant-seeking, water study review, street repairs and a workers’ compensation change.
Mayor Dunphy said the sign in front of Village Hall has continued to degrade and that Service Director Ben Gregory is consulting vendors about replacing the light panel; Mrs. Meyer offered new sign panels and the mayor asked for the panel size and manufacturer information to be emailed to administration. The mayor said she will meet with Josh Prest of Prest Public Strategies next week to explore grant opportunities and that she, Mr. Housley and Mr. Gregory will review the water systems study findings with OHM.
Police Chief Steve Justice congratulated the mayor on another successful year of leadership and credited Ofc. Hostetler, Sgt. Johnson and Lt. Childers for work that led to a conviction and the return of $20,000 to a resident in a recent scam investigation. Council discussed the brightness of cruiser LED light bars; Chief Justice said a low power setting exists and agreed to consult the installer about dimming options.
Service Director Ben Gregory said spring limb pickup is nearly complete, the department will work on Kent Road catch basins and street repairs, and new landscaping has been added at Village Hall. Clerk-Treasurer Sean Housley clarified the handling of water funds and reported the Village is no longer eligible for a Bureau of Workers Compensation group rating discount because of claims between 2021 and 2024; he said the Village may be eligible for up to $18,000 in credit under the group retrospective arrangement if no future claims occur and that a budget appropriation will likely be needed later in the year.
No formal actions were taken on these operational updates beyond acceptance of the check register earlier in the meeting.
