Man arrested after Silver Lake boathouse shooting; suspect pleads no contest, police issue bans

Police Chief Steve Justice reported to Council on May 6 that three males in their 20s were fishing at the Silver Lake boathouse when one discharged a firearm into the lake and others reportedly fired from a truck as they fled. Investigators recovered three shell casings. With assistance from the Stow Police Department, officers identified a suspect who was arrested, pled no contest to discharging a firearm within city limits, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $250. Chief Justice said there was no evidence to support additional charges; all three persons involved received lifetime bans from the Silver Lake boathouse.
Chief Justice told Council there were no reported injuries or property damage. Councilors asked whether the shooter was the driver (the chief said he was not) and whether the assailants were Silver Lake residents; the chief did not believe they were, though one of the suspects’ mothers lives in the village. The chief also said boathouse security cameras were not working at the time but should be fixed soon; he noted there is access to surrounding Flock camera feeds and that standalone Flock cameras cost roughly $3,000 each, which the department has weighed when considering purchases.
Council President Matt Plesich thanked police for their quick work. Chief Justice said speed signs will be placed around the village soon and reminded the public that the Police Memorial is scheduled for May 13 in the Natatorium parking lot.
