BET directs staff to draft charter amendment asking Charter Commission to consider quorum mechanism

The Board of Estimate and Taxation on June 24 directed staff to draft a resolution asking the Charter Commission to consider a charter amendment that would provide a mechanism to ensure the BET can achieve a quorum for conducting business.
Commissioner Payne proposed the staff direction, which also requests the city council consider implementing the proposed amendment by ordinance. The board adopted the staff direction on a voice vote and the clerk said the requested draft resolution will be presented to the BET at its next regular meeting for potential adoption.
President Steve Brandt confirmed the board will receive the draft resolution at the next meeting and commissioners reiterated the goal is to preserve public transparency and ensure the BET can fulfill its statutory duties.
What’s next: Staff will draft the resolution for BET consideration at the next regular meeting; if adopted by the BET the request would be forwarded to the Charter Commission and the city council as appropriate.
