Douglas County approves Visitor Improvement Fund allocations after split vote

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved recommendations from the Visitor Improvement Fund committee on June 23, 2026, voting 3–1 after a presentation by Todd Simon, chair of the committee.

Todd Simon, chair of the Visitor Improvement Fund committee, told the board the funds are intended to help local events and attractions start in July and August and urged prompt deployment: “The sooner we can get these funds deployed, the sooner we can continue to advance the cause of attractions and cultural amenities in the community,” he said.

The recommendations were moved by Commissioner Rogers and seconded by Commissioner Morgan. The board approved the allocations 3–1, with Commissioner Borgensson voting no. Simon said committee members had worked to prioritize events that will kick off over the summer and into the fall and thanked county staff for accommodating the item on a shortened agenda.

The vote authorizes the county to proceed with the committee’s funding recommendations so that awarded projects can begin planning and contracting. The board did not provide additional detail in the meeting about the dollar amounts per award or specific recipient organizations; those allocations were referenced in the committee’s written recommendation packet. The clerk’s office will publish the approved allocation list to county records following the meeting.

Commissioners did not debate specific line-item awards during the public meeting; there were no public comments recorded on this item. The board’s next opportunity to revisit the fund will be at the June 30 meeting if further adjustments or contract approvals are needed.
