Comal County honors retiring deputy Richard Alvarez and approves purchase of duty firearm

Comal County Commissioners on June 25 recognized Richard (Rick) Alvarez for his long service in law enforcement, and the court authorized the routine purchase of a county duty firearm by Alvarez as part of his retirement.
Colleagues told stories about Alvarez's career and contributions. A colleague introduced Alvarez and noted his long tenure in law enforcement; Alvarez then addressed the court, recounting his service and saying he plans to remain involved in civic and ministry work. "I've enjoyed working for the sheriff's department. It's been an honor and a pleasure to serve this community in law enforcement," Alvarez said.
The court then considered a staff request to allow Alvarez to purchase a county‑owned Sig Sauer P320 at the price set by the purchasing director, a retirement practice the county said it performs routinely under Texas Government Code. "Essentially what this is is when we have people retire, they are offered the ability to purchase their firearm," a county presenter stated. Commissioner Hogg moved to approve the request, Commissioner Leacock seconded, and the motion carried.
The court congratulated Alvarez on his retirement. Staff said the sale will follow statutory procedures and that the firearm will be paid for by the retiree or others, not county general funds.
