Aurora to pursue UDO landscaping changes for industrial zones amid drought concerns

Janine Rustad, director of the Planning and Business Development Department, told the council on June 22 that staff will start work to amend the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) landscaping requirements for industrial zones to better conserve water amid the current drought.
"We are in unprecedented times," Rustad said, explaining the amendment would focus on xeriscaping, grouping plantings and balancing water conservation with landscaping's health benefits. She said this first step would coordinate with Aurora Water and later extend to commercial, retail and residential landscaping.
The proposal is sponsored by Councilmember Gardner; Rustad described it as a resolution directing staff to begin the work rather than an immediate ordinance change. After Rustad's presentation the council voiced no opposition and provided direction for staff to proceed.
Staff said the UDO amendment will tie into broader planning work on growth areas and infrastructure needs. Council did not take a formal vote at the study session; staff will continue the drafting and outreach process.
